When students are in speech therapy, they typically have multiple language objectives. However, students only have a limited amount of time in each session. Thus, it can be hard to develop lessons that allow students to show growth within this limited time frame. Therefore, teachers work so hard to develop high-quality activities that maximize every minute of speech therapy. While this may seem challenging, it is absolutely possible. Here are some extra tips on targeting multiple language objectives in speech therapy!
Bringing Books into Sessions
Books are a powerful tool to use! Honestly, they are a fantastic way to target multiple objectives within a single session. For instance, students can talk about vocabulary based on illustrations. Additionally, they can retell key events. Then, the speech therapist can prompt the student to talk about the social situations in the story. Or, the speech therapist can work on following directions by asking the child to find different items. Honestly, this is a great way to listen to different sounds and check for progress.
Speech Therapy Back to School Activities
When figuring out how to target multiple language objectives in speech therapy, look at ready-to-go resources! Honestly, there are so many incredible activities to select from. This means teachers can focus on students and their growth.
This resource is perfect for back-to-school activities. Students will work on so many aspects, such as pronouns, verbs, vocabulary, WH questions, prepositions, and following directions. There are even real photo scene activities and sentence strips. In total, there are 12 activities with each containing up to 20 real photo scenes. This means there is so much variety to work on multiple language objectives! Students will love these speech therapy activities.
Puzzles
When students go to speech therapy, they must be engaged. Otherwise, they will not put their full effort forward while working on multiple language objectives. Therefore, I love to use puzzles because they combine so many skills. For instance, students can talk about objects they see while the pieces go together. They can also answer questions about what they think the entire puzzle will be. If students struggle with a specific sound, speech teachers can even utilize a picture that repeatedly uses that sound. Puzzles are even a great way to work on following directions.
Play Dough
Students love play dough! So, it is the perfect item to use when thinking about targeting multiple language objectives in speech therapy. If students are working on a specific sound, a cookie cutter is perfect for making the letter. Then, students can use letter cut-outs to form words based on this starting letter. Similarly, students can use play dough to build something and then talk all about it. Or, you can give them directions to follow while making. Then, students can talk about the creation. Honestly, time will fly by while students are having fun and engaging in incredible conversation.
Ultimately, when focusing on how to target multiple language objectives in speech therapy, engagement is critical! Students need to be talking to work on so many language objectives. Thankfully, the activities above create exciting and engaging ways for students to love every minute of speech therapy!
